Louise Giovanelli: In the Light of False Suns - FREE

New paintings return to the motifs long central to Louise Giovanelli's work: curtains, hair, female screen idols and the cinematic kiss. The title refers to parhelia, the bright 'false suns' produced by sunlight refracting through ice crystals, which serve here as a figure for the artificial light of cinema, theatre and religious imagery. Three canvases set faces with closed eyes and parted lips against theatrically lit curtains, while a large painting of a meat carcass marks a new subject, its marbled flesh suggesting seascapes and night skies.
