Paula Rego: Dog Woman

The first retrospective devoted to the large pastels Paula Rego (1935-2022) made in 1994-95, which show monumental, physically powerful women in tightly framed, stripped-down settings. Rego posed for them herself in front of a mirror, 'turning myself into an animal', and the series marked the start of her three-decade collaboration with her model Lila Nunes. 'In these pictures every woman's a dog woman, not downtrodden but powerful,' she said; the project led into the most prolific and acclaimed period of her career. The show reassesses its importance and includes works not seen publicly in the UK since the 1990s, alongside Paula Rego: Pendle Witches in the Project Space.
