Tradition/Rebellion: Coming-of-Age Style in Kitakyushu, Japan

From fur-trimmed kimono to gravity-defying hair, the flamboyant outfits worn by Kitakyushu’s 20-year-olds on Coming-of-Age Day break with the formality of the ceremony elsewhere in Japan. The exhibition follows eight of the city’s new adults from first fitting to the day itself, showing the kimono renters, designers, hairdressers and photographers behind each look.
